Mid-IR femtosecond frequency conversion by soliton-probe collision in phase-mismatched quadratic nonlinear crystals.

We show numerically that ultrashort self-defocusing temporal solitons colliding with a weak pulsed probe in the near-IR can convert the probe to the mid-IR. A near-perfect conversion efficiency is possible for a high effective soliton order. The near-IR self-defocusing soliton can form in a quadratic nonlinear crystal (beta-barium borate) in the normal dispersion regime due to cascaded (phase-m...

Mid-IR Silicon Raman Lasers

Silicon is arguably the best Raman medium for the mid-wave infrared spectrum. This new technology can expand the application space of silicon photonics beyond data communication and into biochemical sensing, laser medicine, and LIDAR.

Multi-Mode Mid-IR Silicon Raman Amplifiers

This paper discusses the prospects of silicon as a Mid-wave Infra-red Raman crystal. As a specific example of novel devices that can be realized, we introduce the concept of multi-mode silicon Raman amplifiers and their application in infrared image pre-amplification. The same technology also has application in incoherent beam combining.

Octave-spanning coherent mid-IR generation via adiabatic difference frequency conversion.

We demonstrate efficient downconversion of a near-IR broadband optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA) pulse to a 1.1-octave-spanning mid-IR pulse (measured at -10 dB of peak) via a single nonlinearly and adiabatically chirped quasi-phase-matching grating in magnesium oxide doped lithium niobate. We report a spectrum spanning from 2 to 5 μm and obtained by near full photon number con...
